If you’re an engineer or materials scientist looking for a rewarding new challenge, this one-year full time Engineers Teach Physics teacher training programme could be the perfect opportunity to start your teaching journey. This specialised programme allows you to bring your expertise into the classroom, using your skills and passion to inspire the next generation of physicists.
Developed by a team of practising physics teachers, this course is built upon the foundation of our traditional physics training programme but tailored to help professionals like you transition seamlessly into teaching. By using your industry experience, the programme equips you with the essential skills and knowledge to become an exceptional physics teacher.
*The Department for Education has announced that for the 2026 to 2027 academic year changes will apply to maximum tuition fees and tuition fee loans for approved (fee cap) providers. The tuition fee will increase to £9,790 for standard full-time courses. The government intends to lay out regulations implementing these changes in early 2026. These regulations will be subject to Parliamentary procedure.
What makes our training unique?
- Expert-led training: Delivered by practising teachers in our hub schools. You will receive a tailored physics training programme, combining advanced subject knowledge and expert pedagogical training to give your teaching career a strong and confident start.
- School placements: Gain hands-on teaching experience in a wide network of state and independent schools located near our training hubs. You’ll work with students aged 11-16, with opportunities for post-16 enhancement.
- Blended training experience: Great combination of theory and hands-on classroom experience through school placements.
- Contrasting school placements: As a school centred training provider, you will spend most of your time gaining extensive classroom experience through two placements in different schools. This helps you explore different teaching environments, refine your skills, and prepare for your future career.
- Tailored learning pace: Progress at a pace that suits you with a bespoke training approach.
- Familiarisation event: To help you prepare for your training year, you will attend our ‘familiarisation’ event – a four-day induction that will set the expectation for your training year and will give you the opportunity to meet trainees from all of our hubs across the country.

Entry Requirements
Degree
2:2 bachelors degree (or equivalent) or above, in engineering or material science.
This course is designed for candidates who have a background in engineering or material science. If your degree is in physics, please apply to our physics course.
If you need to improve your subject knowledge, you may be asked to complete a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course.
GCSEs
GCSE grade 4 (C), or above, or equivalent qualification, in mathematics and English.
Equivalency tests: We will consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in maths.
If English is not your first language, you must have an Academic IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in all skills, achieved in the last two years.
The National Mathematics and Physics SCITT is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of it’s trainees and the children and young people in its placement schools. An appointment to train with the NMAP SCITT will be subject to a range of pre-employment checks as set out in our Safeguarding Policy page.

You already have this if, for example, you:
- Are an Irish citizen.
- Have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- Have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Course Structure
For the majority of the year, you will be in your placement schools, gaining valuable teaching experience. Your placement schools could be in either the state or independent sectors.
Training is delivered by hub subject leads, who are experienced subject-specialist teachers. You will be assigned a mentor at your placement schools. You will regularly meet with them to discuss your process and any questions you have.
You will also attend hub training days at your chosen hub along with central training days that include a mix of online sessions and in-person training at a central location in Sheffield.
